Zetsuai 1989 translated into English as Hopeless Love 1989 is a shounen-ai drama created by Minami Ozaki. The OVA was released in 1992. The manga and the OVA were followed by Bronze: Zetsuai Since 1989. The original subtitlers titled this OVA as Desperate Love '89.
Zetsuai 1989 is one of the most famous (or infamous depending on how you look at it) shounen-ai OVAs available. It is the story of a mega-idol Kouji Nanjo who fell in love with a soccer player named Takuto Izumi when he was younger. He later runs into the soccer player after a night a boozing wherein he passes out in an alley due to a drunken stupor. Because it was raining and cold, he becomes ill and is nursed back to health by him. Izumi (this is his last name, but it's the only name that he goes by in the anime) catches the cold that Kouji has, and it's Kouji's turn to nurse him back to health. But Kouji learns that Izumi is a stubborn person who is dedicated to everything he does and everyone he loves. He also learns that Izumi's past is haunted by tragedy that had scarred him both literally and figuratively. Armed with this knowledge, Kouji begins to force himself into Izumi's life, vying only for Izumi's friendship. But as time progresses, Kouji's infatuation becomes an obsession, a hopeless yet desperate love.
In the manga, Kouji mistakes Izumi for a girl when he was younger, and then upon realizing that Izumi is man he discovers that he cannot quell his emotions. In the OVA it isn't quite clear whether Kouji has always been infatuated with the male Izumi, but it implies that he has always loved the male Izumi. This is kinda wierd considering one of the very first lines that Kouji has is "I'm not interested in men!"
