Bronze is the sequel OVA to Zetsuai 1989 created by Minami Ozaki. These two OVAs are perhaps the most well-known of the shounen-ai genre. Bronze is also known as Bronze: Zetsuai since 1989.
For starters, let me say as a huge shounen-ai fan I'm kinda biased ^_^' I loved Bronze as much as I loved Zetsuai 1989. However, as a self-proclaimed otaku, it is only fair that I warn the viewer. Bronze is lacking in many ways in comparison to a lot of other anime series/OVAs. For starters, Zetsuai 1989 leaves the viewer wondering what will happen to the relationship of the pair, and the ending seems more in line with the title. Bronze --without telling the viewer-- takes place a year after the Zetsuai OVA. So that will throw the viewer off immediately if s/he is unaware of the manga and the timeline, but thank goodness for translator's notes! Also, the artwork takes a radical turn (which you can see in the image gallery); for example, the characters chins are so pointy! I almost laughed at their chins during one of the more serious scenes. Also another weaker point in the movie is the melodrama... eeeuugh! I thought I was watching a soap opera, I actually have this same complaint about the manga after book 5. Lastly, Koji loses all coolness, hidoi ne?! Despite my harsh criticism of the OVA, I still will say that I loved Bronze. I've just watched it over ten times, and I still enjoy every scene. As you can see, I'm forgiving when it comes to Ozaki-sensei's works.
For those wondering what that long passage is in the beginning of the OVA, it is a poem by Ozaki. The translation is provided by the Lupin Anime Gang (the original subtitlers) in their translation notes. Since I do not usually include translation notes with my encodes, I'll put up the translation to the poem on this page... eventually.
