Kaze no Tairiku translated into English as The Weathering Continent is an intelligent drama of the fantasy/adventure genre. The original series was created by Sei Takewaka (writer) and Mutsumi Inomata (artist). The movie was released in 1992, and it was fansubbed in English by Anime Beach.
Kaze no Tairiku is not a light-hearted fantasy, it is a philosophical work that explores the ideas of life, death, identity, greed, poverty, and fate. Three travellers find themselves in an Aztec-like City of the Dead. This City of the Dead was built so that all of its inhabitants --who were once a wealthy lot-- could continue to life prosperously and happily in their after-life. However, at the time Kaze no Tairiku takes place, the world is no longer a prosperous one, but the lands are devasted by a severe drought and plagued with mankind's own savagery. Because of its rumored prosperity, grave robbers seek this hidden city. However, the City of the dead is housed between two gods and whoever disturbs the dead must face a curse --or is it a blessing that is received? That, I guess, is up to you to determine.
I had to watch this movie twice before I was able to decide whether I liked it or not. Some of the other members were enthusiastic about it, and they gave it good reviews. Here is an excerpt from the review by OAC member Kei. Please visit the Review Section to read the entire review:
This has to be my favorite stand alone movie I've seen so far. A story of three travelors in a dying continent get mixed in a curse dealing with a city for the dead. Most anime movies show a deal of rushing at the end, or in certain parts that destract from the over all feeling of the movie but Weathering Continent has a well spaced out plot. In this movie you can even see some character development.
