Umi ga Kikoeru translated into English as I Can Hear the Sea is a shoujo coming of age drama created by Himuro Saeko. It aired in Japan in 1993 on Nihon TV.
The beauty of this movie lies in both it's simplicity and it realism. Oddly, this movie is more realistic than most non-animated movies here in the US. The written characters are subtle yet fascinating, and the seiyuu do an excellent job portraying them. What I loved about it was knowing that what happens in this movie, could happen and probably does happen all the time in reality, and that made me relate to the characters even more.
I was hesitant to order this fansub based off of an opinion a long time ago, saying that the movie was boring. Well, I admit, it doesn't have space ships, monsters, ninjas, a magical book, or the F4... but that's what makes it a pearl among these genres. It tells a story of young adults coming of age, and it does an excellent job doing so.
There are two excellent sites dedicated to Umi ga Kikoeru, on of them having the timed scripts available, another providing a music sample from the movie. I highly recommend checking both of these sites out on the related links page.
